Since 2022, the WHO Global Surveillance System (GSMS) has noted an increase in reports of counterfeit semaglutide preparations in all geographical regions. This is the first official recommendation issued by WHO following the confirmation of some reports.

In this sense, Dr. Yukiko Nakatani, WHO Deputy Director-General for Medicines, assured that “WHO advises health professionals, regulators and the public to be aware of these batches of counterfeit medicines”.
Therefore, he added, “we call on stakeholders to stop any use of suspicious medicines and inform the relevant authorities.”
